What is Science? What is a Scientist?

‘Science is a way of exploring and investigating the world around us, both natural and man- made, with the aim of learning more about it and understanding it better. Today, the strength of science is thought to lie in its openness to criticism and correction. Science is regarded as a powerful and influential activity precisely because the truth of scientific knowledge cannot be taken for granted and because it is always open to question, this makes a scientist.’
    Martin Wenham

‘To develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.’
    Nicky Waller CIEC

All of the Science curriculum ensures cultural capital is woven within all lessons we teach and the resources that we chose in line with the national curriculum.

We cover the full national curriculum for science and use national curriculum statements to ensure we cover a broad and balanced curriculum, but essentially, the programme of study for both KS1 and 2 are constructed as follows:

    • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
    • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
    • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
At Linden, we teach children to be scientists by:

    • encouraging them to ask questions
    • using key vocabulary
    • making observations
    • recording their findings
    • performing tests and investigations
    • using observations, tests and observations to answer questions
    • gathering and recording data
    • encouraging curiosity
Across the school, this is achieved through:

    • Teaching the national curriculum ensuring skills and knowledge are built upon year on year
    • Providing through lesson design clear opportunities to investigate and observe
    • Providing interactive scientific displays in the classroom
