What is RE? What is a theologist?

‘The principal aim of religious education is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.’
Leicestershire Agreed Syllabus for RE 2021–2026

    RE at Linden:

At Linden our intention is to provide an enquiry-based curriculum which enables children to become inquisitive, resilient, respectful and accepting individuals who are able to make their own informed decisions and to have the confidence to express and articulate their own ideas and views about the diverse world we live in.

Through systematic and progressive planning, we intend to deliver a balanced curriculum which explores the concepts of religion and belief. Our aim is to promote the spiritual, cultural, moral and mental development of our pupils and to prepare them to have moral awareness, social understanding and community cohesion in our school, our community and the wider world in a positive way.

Our RE curriculum also ensures that skills are developed and built upon each year so that progression can be seen clearly across the school.

At Linden, we teach children to be religiously educated by providing opportunities to:

    • Make sense of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs.
    • Understand the impact and significance of religious and non-religious beliefs.
    • Make connections between religious and non-religious beliefs, concepts, practices and ideas studied.

We aim to increase opportunities for children to:

    • Study stories and myths that introduce them to concepts of good, evil, fear, courage, conflict and justice in ways that are safe and exciting.
    • Take part in and observe religious assemblies.
    • Visit places of worship.
    • Invite visitors into school to represent different religions.

These opportunities provide first-hand experiences for our children, to spark their interest and relate new learning to their own experience.

At Linden, children are religiously educated because they:

    • Demonstrate a respectful and positive attitude towards people of any religion in school and in the wider community and show an understanding of cultural beliefs different to their own.
    • Will have a broad and balanced understanding and awareness of the world around them.
    • Will acknowledge the diversity, religions and beliefs of their local community.
    • Will be confident in discussing philosophical questions and know how to be respectful as a listener.
    • Will be sensitive to the views and beliefs of others, and know that religious education has an impact on the future evolution of society.
    • Will know that they are in a community where their own thoughts, views and beliefs are valued and are safe to be shared.
